Creating a Sunset Portrait in Procreate
One of the most simple drawings in procreate that will start help sharpen your skills is creating a sunset. Using just a couple of colors you can create a beautiful multi layered sunset. You can find a short time-lapse of my process here. A sunset is an easy way to start if you are a beginner because at the ease of a google search or search on youtube you will find hundrededs of tutorials or tips on the techniques. When I am searching for useful tips I usually use keywords like “Sunset procreate” or “procreate sunset techniques” to find other tips at ease. Here is my own personal technique that I find most ease doing. Follow this 10 step process and work on your graphic design journey!
Below I have added the colors which I have used. I have also added hexadecimal numbers in case you would like the exact colors.
Step 1: Starting with the Monoline brush which is found under the calligraphy section of the Brush Library, draw a straight line across the middle of the canvas like a horizon.
Step 2: Add a half-circle to the line creating a setting sun.
Step 3: Drop In yellow into the sunset, then drop blue into the ocean, like this.
Step 4: Create a new layer and drag the layer under layer one. On this layer, you will take the Dark Purple, lighter purple, and light pink. Using the medium-hard blend brush which is located in the airbrushing section of the brush library. Starting with the dark purple at the top, layer each color from top to bottom.
Step 5: Selecting the magic wand tool, select the gaussian blur effect. Adjust the blur to be about 41%. This will create a sunset effect on the horizon.
Step 6: Adding a new layer, Create a yellow circle which aligns with the setting sun.
Step 7: Fill in the circle and move the layer in between the first and second layers. Then use the gaussian blur effect again to create a shining sun effect. Set the gaussian blue to around 58%.
Step 8: Create a new layer (which will be layer 4), then find the oceans brush located in the elements section of the brush library. Use the brush and lightly gaze over the ocean with the dark blue color.
Step 9: Select the gradient Map under the magic wand tool, select the blaze option, and then adjust each color box to light blue, dark blue, red, and yellow. Play with the adjustments to where you like your sunset look.
Step 10: Finally, you will add some stars to the top of the sky to create a nighttime sky look. Add a new layer and then head over to the brush library, select the glimmer brush which can be found under the luminance section. Glaze over the top of the dark blue with some small stars. Using a white color will add a nice star effect.
After these 10 steps, you will have your own sunset drawing. One of the most popular and easy beginner tutorials you will find and will help develop your procreate skills. When I was first starting to use procreate, I did multiple different tutorials with sunsets because it uses many different functions that I now use daily with other creations.
